Snow Crash: Hiro Protagonist by cryoclaire Snow Crash: Hiro Protagonist by cryoclaire
HIROOO. Or at least, a Metaverse version of him. I wanted to go for an oldschool/retro look, but i think it just came out retarded >_>;; No, metaverse never looked like a bunch of pixels in my mind..but im sure it looked like it to people in 1992..8D

I want to read snow Crash so bad now. I heard from TV Tropes that it's really good. Also how I got here.

Hiro is possibly one of the coolest fictional characters ever created! You captured his attitude very well. There are some really great touches to this image, I like the way you have placed his name where you have and the 'buildings' in the back ground are really suited. The pixel ground changes the perspective a little, it makes it look like he could be standing at the top of stairs that are dropping away rather than a flat plain, which brings Hiro out of the surrounding environment. More like he is placed on top, rather than inside the setting. Though I quite like this effect, and it could well have been what you were after. A few adjustments to the very front of the pizel ground would enhance a sense of flat plain and create more realistic distance between the fore ground and the back drop.
^^attempting a critique hehe sorry
I must say I love this image, fabulous work :D

Wow, thanks for the detailed crit :) It's always really appreciated. This was drawn a while ago, and as far as I remember, I got bored of doing the background 8/ I think my attention span has slightly improved since then XD;

holy mother of all that is retro and epic, your art is amazing. Im not sure if you are doing this, but I am currently writing a story that I am also making it into somewhat of a comic as well. I would love to add your character into my story and if you are interested helping me draw and layout pages. You could even help with the story a bit if you wish but I pretty much have it all figured out more or less. I am just in the need for a better artist then me. Your style I feel would be perfect for my story. My character is called Retro, but he is also known as the Retro Samurai in the story. If you are interested in becoming my partner I would be honored. Please let me know if you wish to hear more about my story and characters.

Hi! Thanks for the offer, but I only accept paid work right now - I barely have time fore personal projects, let alone doing work for free :)
Also, that character doesn't actually belong to me, it's a fanart of an awesome character from Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash - I highly recommend it, especially if you're interested in cyberpunk :)

I love your drawing of Hiro. I'm a good chunk of the way through the audiobook version. I love how you've done the background, simple to keep the eye on the subject, but portrays the metaverse very well.

@subtle fury, yes he does have "short dreads" I just finished reading Snow Crash for the umpteenth time.

Nice representation although the background clashes a little, it would have worked better if the whole illustration had stuck with the monochrome look of the character. Also, the anatomy of the arms is a little off, slightly too short.

Nice effort though, he definitely looks convincingly "blasian"

I always pictured the metaverse as kind of like real life minus the laws of physics and the limitation of resources and the addition of a hell of alot of ads and I always pictured hiro's avatar as looking more like real life hiro, still great job, it does most definitely capture what people might have pictured it to be like when the book first came out :D

You're welcome! I live to let artists know when their work appears elsewhere on the Internet. If I think I've seen it at deviantART before, of if the site expicitly credits a Deviant or links to their deviation page, I'll let that artist know.

Pretty much exactly how I pictured Metaverse-Hiro. Except I imagined his goggles to be more like WWI-WWII fighter-pilot goggles rather than swim goggles. Fighter-pilot goggles always seemed more bad-ass :D

And yeah, the Metaverse. I actually imagined it having a similar color-pallet (like on the cover), neon greens, purples, blues and magentas. Maybe there are some areas of the metaverse that has pixelated architecture :D I imagine it to be alot like a 3-dimensional version of the spirit of the internet, a chaotic wild-west. Lots of random architecture like cathedrals, 100-mile high skyscrapers, castles, things that defy gravity and description, various flying machines, annoying advertisements everywhere, you know what I mean?

most people draw him with these, but somehow i like the simple merged goggles more..ah well XD
And yeah, that's pretty much how i imagine it, too (: But originally it was just going to be a drawing of Hiro and i couldnt arse myself to draw every bulding...XD Should definitely do it some day.

I love how you did Hiro (did he really have dreads though? have to check the book, but oh well he can have anything in the Metaverse :)).

I bet also you put a lot of work in the background and it is good stand-alone but isn't like I pictured the Metaverse at all. Something more Second-Life-like maybe - it is inspired by the book after all.

That's not much of a critique really, just awful fanboyism. ;)

Thanks! Yeah, he did have dreadlocks, i think they might have been shorter than that, but nevermind : D
And i actually agree about the metaverse..But slapping a bunch of pixels and effects is easier, than actually drawing buildings, ahaha. I did imagine it being all neon-y though. May be i should do a proper picture of it later, with Talking Penis avatars and hundreds of Brandys and all...X)

Second Life was inspired by this? Eeh, makes sense..i played the game last year i think, and didn't like it :( I don't know, everything seemed pretty pointless and the graphics sucked..May be i should have lurked a bit more.

it's ok, Anonymous are there to help it morph into the real thing! ;) [link]

but actually the "ordinary" users are doing just as well - [link]

I haven't actually tried it, but from stories I've heard in some places it's not that bland and turns into a real freak show - so in that aspect it lives up to Neil's Metaverse... :D

You made Hiro pretty hot too! I like the stuff in his dreadlocks. Very awesome pic.

(But...why does he need his Metaverse goggles when he's in the Metaverse? Oh well, artistic liscence!)

I also see you requested critique...I wish I could help more, but the only thing I see that looks off are the small straps on the frong of his kimono; they're not quite pointed at the angle they should be. But even that might be irrelevent, since this is a picture of a computer avater, and isn't supposed to look too realistic.

Thanks, I think i see what you mean! I request critiques most of the time, but hardly ever get any :'D And..uh..no idea why he's wearing goggles. It wasn't supposed to be a metaverse avatar of him originally, and then i was too lazy to redo his head 8D
